Precautions for using excavators in summer

2026/03/25 14:18

Operating an excavator during the summer requires extra attention to the machine's thermal management and the operator's environment to prevent breakdowns and ensure safety.

1. Engine and Hydraulic Cooling

Summer heat puts significant stress on fluid systems. Regularly monitor these areas to prevent overheating:

  • Clean the Cooling Package: Dust, debris, and dry vegetation can clog the radiator, oil cooler, and air conditioning condenser. Use compressed air to clean these fins daily to ensure maximum airflow.

  • Check Coolant Levels: Ensure the engine coolant is at the correct level and the mixture is appropriate. A clean, unobstructed cooling system is essential to prevent the engine from reaching critical temperatures during high-load operations.

  • Monitor Hydraulic Temperatures: Hydraulic oil thins in extreme heat, which can lead to pump cavitation or reduced power. If your machine shows high hydraulic temperature warnings, allow it to idle for a few minutes before shutting it down to let the system cool gradually.

2. Maintenance of Wear Components

  • Track Tension: Rubber tracks can expand and become more flexible in extreme heat. Check your track tension regularly to prevent them from de-threading or experiencing premature wear due to excessive slack.

  • Greasing Intervals: High temperatures can cause grease to liquefy and run out of pins and bushings faster than usual. Increase your greasing frequency to ensure all metal-on-metal contact points remain properly lubricated.

  • Battery Health: Heat can accelerate battery fluid evaporation. Ensure terminals are clean and tight, and check that the battery is securely mounted to avoid vibrations that can damage internal plates in hot conditions.

3. Operator Safety and Environment

  • Hydration and Breaks: Heat exhaustion is a major safety risk. Maintain a steady intake of water and take scheduled breaks in a shaded area or an air-conditioned cabin to stay alert.

  • Cab Air Quality: Ensure the cab air filter is clean. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forcing the air conditioning system to work harder and reducing its cooling effectiveness.

  • Fire Prevention: Summer often means dry brush. Avoid parking the machine over dry grass or leaves, as the hot exhaust system can easily ignite them. Carry a fire extinguisher in the cab and ensure it is fully charged and accessible.
