How to maintain the excavator in summer

Maintaining an excavator during the summer requires a focus on thermal management and preventative cleaning to ensure the machine doesn't overheat or suffer from premature wear. High temperatures affect everything from hydraulic viscosity to battery health.

1. Cooling System Care

The most critical task in summer is ensuring the cooling package can breathe.

  • Daily Radiator Cleaning: Use compressed air to blow out the radiator, oil cooler, and A/C condenser. Dust and debris act as insulation, quickly leading to engine overheating.

  • Coolant Inspections: Verify the coolant level and the integrity of the radiator cap. A faulty cap can't maintain the pressure needed to raise the coolant's boiling point.

  • Belt Tension: Check the fan belt for cracks or slipping. A loose belt reduces the fan's RPM, significantly cutting cooling efficiency.

2. Lubrication and Fluids

Heat changes the physical properties of your lubricants.

  • Greasing Frequency: High temperatures can cause grease to thin and run out. Increase your greasing intervals for all pins and bushings to ensure a consistent protective film.

  • Hydraulic Health: Monitor for hydraulic oil degradation. If the oil looks dark or smells burnt, it has lost its lubricating properties and should be replaced to protect the pump.

  • Battery Maintenance: Heat accelerates the evaporation of battery acid. Check the electrolyte levels (if applicable) and ensure terminals are clean to prevent charging issues.

3. Operational Best Practices

Your operating habits can prevent many heat-related failures.

  • The "Idle Down" Rule: Never shut off a hot engine immediately. Allow the machine to idle for 3–5 minutes before shutdown. This allows the turbocharger and engine block to cool gradually, preventing "heat soak."

  • Monitor Gauges: Pay close attention to the hydraulic temperature gauge. If it climbs into the red, stop work and allow the machine to idle until the temperature stabilizes.

  • Tire and Track Care: For wheeled models, check tire pressure as heat causes air expansion. For tracked models, ensure track tension is correct, as rubber becomes more pliable in the heat.
